The use of drones in warfare has brought many advantages. This is explained by the availability and extended functionality of commercial devices. Quadcopters are upgraded to perform aerial reconnaissance, fire adjustment, and dropping small munitions, which significantly enhances the capabilities of units, especially when military drones are used in limited numbers.
Main Technical Characteristics of DJI and Autel
DJI quadcopters and Autel UAVs differ significantly depending on the model. In general, Autel drones have longer flight times and better camera specifications. DJI drones, in turn, are equipped with long-range data transmission capabilities and obstacle detection functions.
The main parameters of drones from both manufacturers are presented in the table:

Use for Reconnaissance and Observation
DJI and Autel UAVs are used by military units to conduct reconnaissance and monitor enemy actions. The widespread use of such UAVs is explained by a number of advantages, including:
- Advanced cameras. Drones are equipped with high-resolution cameras, allowing clear images at long distances.
- Thermal cameras. This tool makes it possible to detect objects in low light or fog.
- Night vision. The system improves visibility at night, making UAVs useful for operations.
In addition, several models feature extra sensors that increase the accuracy of determining the distance to observation targets.

Artillery Fire Adjustment and Targeting
DJI and Autel quadcopters often act as combat drones, providing fire adjustment for artillery systems and targeting priority enemy objectives. These devices are compact – easy to carry and do not take up much space.
Moreover, DJI and Autel drones have a number of other advantages that make them indispensable for fire adjustment and targeting:
- High-quality cameras transmitting clear real-time images;
- Presence of thermal imaging, which allows detection of objects in poor visibility conditions;
- Long flight time – drones can provide targeting for 40–45 minutes, sufficient for destroying priority targets with artillery fire.
Thus, DJI and Autel quadcopters have earned a strong reputation in the Ukrainian army thanks to their technical capabilities.
Advantages and Limitations in Combat Conditions
DJI and Autel drones are widely used on the battlefield in the context of repelling Russian armed aggression. These quadcopters have proven themselves well thanks to a number of advantages. The strengths of DJI UAVs include:
- Wide distribution. Many military units use the company’s drones due to the large number of models and availability.
- High quality. Drones are equipped with powerful cameras and stabilization functions, ensuring high-quality footage.
Autel drones are in demand thanks to:
- Improved protection against electronic warfare – devices have a well-designed electronic system that helps avoid signal suppression;
- Longer operating time – equipped with capacious batteries that provide more time for missions;
- High wind resistance – ensures precise drone control by operators.
At the same time, there are limitations. Drones from both companies have limited flight range, low payload capacity, restrictions in difficult conditions, and dependence on satellite navigation.

Practical Tips for Use in Ukraine
When using drones, several important practical recommendations should be followed. These include:
- Zone check. Before launching a UAV, it is necessary to check for restricted zones in the area.
- Legislation. During martial law, the use of civilian drones may be restricted by legislative acts.
- Attention to conditions. Drones should not be launched in bad weather or limited visibility to avoid accidents.
- Prohibited items. It is forbidden to attach items not intended for use with drones, as well as dangerous or explosive substances.
In addition, one should not interfere with the work of emergency services or obstruct their activities.
